Chief Consulting Officer

Professor Dexter Tagwireyi, PhD, is the Chief Consulting Officer of Ampelos International Consultancy (Pvt) Ltd. He is a seasoned academician, pharmacist and toxicologist with two decades of experience working in academia. “Prof Toxins” as he is passionately known is author to over 40 scientific papers and book chapters, including an opinion article in the high impact journal Nature. He is also recipient of various awards and is an alumni of the prestigious Global Young Academy (GYA), the Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP) as well as the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) ambassadorship programme, and is a current Fellow of the Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences (ZAS).

Professor Tagwireyi has consulted on a number of projects with international organisations including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Regionally, he was involved in the establishment of the Network of African Poisons Centres and Applied Toxicologists (NAPCAT). He also has vast experience in setting up and running drug and poisons centres in an African setting. Prof Tagwireyi also has drug regulation experience in evaluating clinical trials (including trial site inspections), bioequivalence studies, veterinary clinical trials and drug dossiers, and currently sits in three expert committees of the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ). He also has experience in pharmacy profession regulation having served in the Education and Liaison Committee of the Pharmacists Council of Zimbabwe (PCZ) for almost a decade and being a current member of the same council. Prof Tagwireyi has experience in planning and conducting quality audits of Higher Education degree programmes at both national and regional level.

Prof Tagwireyi is a leading authority and expert in the derivation of Health Based Exposure Limits (HBELs), specifically Permitted Daily Exposures (PDEs) of active pharmaceutical ingredients as well as other chemicals required for cleaning validation in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. To this end, he has helped a number of regional pharmaceutical companies with their PDE monographs.

Dexter is a registered pharmacist (PCZ) and a European Registered Toxicologist (ERT) on the United Kingdom Register of Toxicologists (UKRT).
